Domestic Violence Awareness
We support the victims of domestic violence and actively work to increase awareness of this heartbreaking issue. Our beneficiary is a local shelter called True North, and it is the only residential facility in Boone County that supports the victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Each October, in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, members organize a campus-wide event to raise awareness of domestic violence and raise funds for True North. The main event is called “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” Teams compete in relays wearing high heels and participate in. We also hold a late-night dinner event called "Burgers and Fries with the Alpha Chi’s" where residents from all over Columbia come to the house to eat yummy burgers and fries and enjoy live entertainment. All the proceeds go directly to True North.
Throughout the year, Alpha Chis participate in other organizations’ philanthropies to raise money for numerous local and national charities. The giving spirit of Alpha Chi Omega extends far beyond the Greek community. Our sisters devote hundreds of hours to special causes around campus and the community. Whether they are organizing the campus-wide blood drive, helping out at the local hospitals, or tutoring underprivileged students, Alpha Chis enthusiastically give back to their community and support their fellow students and sisters.
Other projects we do include:
Healthy Relationships Week: For one week each February, Alpha Chi Omegas share what they think "love is" by writing it down and posting a picture on social media. This is promoted by Alpha Chi Omega Headquarters and girls encourage non-Alpha Chi's to participate as well.
These Hands Don’t Hurt: Each spring, Alpha Chi Omega teams up with the men of Alpha Kappa Lambda to raise money and awareness for the victims of domestic violence. We set up stations across campus, where members of the MU community can sign the wall, pledging to put an end to domestic violence.
The Little Black Dress Event: Members of Alpha Chi model black dresses at an event hosted by True North, our local beneficiary. All money raised goes directly to the shelter in Columbia.
Valentines for True North: On Valentine’s Day, our sisters get together to make valentines and decorate cookies for the women at True North.
Denim Day: Each year on April 29th, the women of Alpha Chi Omega put on an event we call "Denim Day". On this day Alpha Chi have music, food and arts and crafts on its lawn to show our support for Sexual Assult Awareness month.
